AIBA have proclaimed the 2017 Year of Africa, a scheme designed to “bring education, empowerment and a legacy for the region’s boxing at the start of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycle”. It is hoped the Year of Africa will help to deliver a 250 per cent increase in the number of certified coaches, referees and judges and technical staff across the continent. Held at the Togo Olympic Committee headquarters, AIBA also invited representatives from several other of the country’s national federations to take part, with the likes of the athletics, cycling and swimming also in attendance at the important opening-day event. AIBA’s 2017 Year of Africa is just one of several initiatives currently being undertaken by the world governing body, including #HeadsUp, the fantastic work to help prevent concussions and cuts.
