The country claimed silver at last year's event and had been tipped to challenge for the title again.

However, their displays in the Austrian capital today will have changed a lot of people's minds at the Rathausplatz.

Their first game ended in agonising defeat to Poland by a 22-21 scoreline.

A late basket from Darius Tarvydas gave the Lithuanians the lead but Mateusz Szlachetka was on target with a buzzer beater to send the match into overtime.

Adrian Bogucki then dealt the final blow with a one point shot to cap off a stunning solo performance.

His player value score of 10.7 set him apart from the rest of the field as he racked up nine points, seven rebounds and three highlights.

Later in the day, Lithuania then lost by a single point once again.

They were beaten by Israel 15-14 with a last-gasp shot proving the difference for a second time, this time courtesy of Joaquin Szuchman.

The defeats meant that Lithuania missed out on an expected pole position in Pool C, which would have ensured direct passage to the quarterfinals.

Instead, they came second by way of point ratio as all five teams finished with two wins and two losses.

Alongside third-placed Belgium they will progress to the round-of-16. 

In the women's tournament, Pool C was also decided with Canada taking first place.

They were in dominant form to bulldoze past Mongolia 21-9 and Hungary 21-11.

Paige Crozon starred against Mongolia in their first match with a commanding 11 points before an impressive display on both sides of the ball from Katherine Plouffe, on six points and nine rebounds, ensured they advanced to the quarter-finals.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow in Austria with the conclusion of the pool stage.
