The nation's team was tied with France and Hungary on one gold medal apiece but claimed three silvers to sit at the summit.

Andrea Manzi prevailed in the men's 10-kilometres event for Italy's sole triumph as he got revenge over Kristóf Rasovszky.

The Hungarian prevented Manzi from claiming a win in home waters in Golfo Aranci at the last edition.

Manzi's  time of 1 hour 52min 37.1sec saw him lead an Italian one-two with compatriot Marcello Guidi.

Hungary's David Betlehem rounded out the top three ahead of Rasovszky.

Rasovszky held the lead for the first two laps before Betlehem took over on lap three.

Guidi and Manzi stayed closed, however, and pressed on in lap four, pulling away from the Hungarians to develop an insurmountable lead.

France's Caroline Jouisse prevailed in the women's 10km to end German Leonie Beck's chances of a third straight victory. 

Beck was leading after 6km but suddenly ran out of steam to eventual drop down to 17th place by the end.

Jouisse benefitted and clinched gold with a time 2:01:12.10, while Italian Arianna Bridi and The Netherland's Sharon Van Rouwendaal joined her in the podium after a photo finish.

They both clocked in after 2:01:13.00 and as a result were each awarded silver.

Rasovszky did get gold medal as he helped Hungary triumph in the 4x1500 metres mixed relay alongside Betlehem, Mira Szemcsak and Bettina Fabian.

The series is set to continue with the penultimate event in Paris on August 5 and 6.

The races are due to be held in the River Seine and act as a test event for next year's Olympic Games in the French capital.
