They include Hope Chmiel, who competed in the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Hawaii and is set to race in the women's 200 metres backstroke.

Larn Hamblyn-Ough, who also made the trip to Hawaii and is down for the men's 400m freestyle and 1500m freestyle, is another named.

"This is a team full of exciting young athletes who have all made excellent progress this year," Swim New Zealand national development leader Alastair Johnson said.

"I am confident the athletes will race their hearts out in Trinidad and take significant steps forwards with their swimming journey."

Danielle Asiata, who won the New Zealand Age Group Championships at Hawkes Bay last month in both the 200m and 400m medley, is set to race in the shorter event at Trinbago 2023.

Hanna Abdou has been chosen for the women's 400 metres freestyle.

Amelia Bray, who swims in the 100m butterfly, has also been chosen for the Tri Series against Australia which is scheduled to follow Trinbago 2023 in September.

Charlotte Parmenter from Christchurch is down for the women's 50m freestyle.

Caleb Carlisle of Napier, another to perform superbly in at the National Age Group Championships, is selected for the men's 100m butterfly.

Auckland pair Harrison Klowens and Jasper Cornish are both selected for the men's 50 metres freestyle and Cornish is also expected to also swim 100m backstroke.

Kevin Zhang has one of the busiest programmes at the Games as he is set to race in the 100m and 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley.

Women's 100m backstroke swimmer Pippa Mihaka and men's 200m breaststroker Leo Arrowsmith have both been conditionally selected.

Their places are subject to additional quota places for the Games being granted by the Commonwealth Games Federation.

"The Commonwealth Youth Games are a wonderful opportunity and I know the team will really benefit from the experience," New Zealand Olympic Committee chief executive Nicki Nicol said.

"The multi-sport format gives young athletes a taste of what the Olympic and Commonwealth Games are like, and helps them gain the skills necessary to be able to achieve at the highest levels of competition. 

"These athletes have worked incredibly hard to be selected for the team and I wish them the very best."

Lewis Clareburt, who won three gold medals at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau, won the 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley titles for New Zealand at the senior Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year.

Aquatics at Trinbago 2023 is set to take place at Couva on the outskirts of Port of Spain.

The Games are scheduled to begin on August 4.
