Organisers of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics have thanked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for their "patience and cooperation" in an update to its Coordination Commission, on the eve of the 1,000 days to go milestone.

The Organising Committee provided an update on the formation of Cabina di Regia, a coordination group that provides support and features representatives from the Government and host territories.

They also explained about the streamlining of their Board, led by Milan Cortina 2026 President Giovanni Malagò.

Milan Cortina 2026 has recently appointed Andrea Francisi as chief Games operations officer, and double Olympic fencing gold medallist Diana Bianchedi as chief strategy, planning and legacy officer, who will support chief executive Andrea Varnier.

Among the recent projects for the Organising Committee has been the creation of the Games Plan, which outlines key activities and milestones in Games preparations.

Regarding venues, organisers expressed a preference to use a temporary field in Milan for Olympic speed skating competitions, adding that progress was being made towards finalising the venue masterplan, with a view to presenting it to the IOC Executive Board in the coming months.

Updates were also given about the commercial programme, which has seen five domestic partners appointed since the start of the year, and the roll-out of the Milano Cortina Gen26 education programme, which aims to inspire children to take up the sport in the build-up to the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Following the meeting Malagò praised the IOC for its patience and said the Commission’s guidance would help shape their work going forward.

"We are extremely grateful for the atmosphere of patience and competent cooperation that characterises our relationship, not only with this Commission but, in every instance, with the IOC, the International Paralympic Committee and the International Federations," he said.

"We are very well aware of the challenges ahead of us, but I must say that I take a certain comfort in the closing report.

"This report clearly sets out our priorities and leads the way for our work in the future.

"Our new governance and organisation are set to guarantee rapid decision-making and efficient internal communication.

"I trust that the targets discussed in this Coordination Commission meeting will be achieved."

IOC Coordination Commission chair Sari Essayah, who competed in the women’s 10 kilometres race walk for Finland at two Olympic Games added: "With just under three years to go until the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, we are now entering an exciting and crucial phase.

"We take confidence from the fact that the Organising Committee now has a strong team in place, new commercial partners have been announced, and important decisions have been taken with regard to venues.

"The foundation work has progressed well and will allow for further acceleration of the preparations in the coming months."

The Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are due to take place from February 6 to 22 2026, with the Paralympics set to follow from March 6 to 15.
