Australia topped the standings at the NZCT New Zealand & Oceania Canoe Sprint Championships & Asia Pacific Cup on Lake Karapiro with 20 gold, 18 silver, and 15 bronze medals.

The Australians were competing as a whole and finished above a host of regional clubs from the host nation as well as other countries from the continent.

North Shore Canoe Club's 19 golds saw them finish in second place while Poverty Bay Kayak Club rounded out the top three with 17 wins.

One of the stars of the Championships was Eastern Bay Canoe Racing Club's Dame Lisa Carrington.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist triumphed in both the women's K1 200 metres and 500m.

"The 200m is still really important and good for me and I recognise the 200m is important for the 500m," she said.

"It has been good to be involved in those high-quality races but also to be around the youngsters and masters paddlers, it is always really great to be among the canoe sprint community."

Australia found the most success in the youth events, with just two of their champions being found in the senior contests.

Will Spencer prevailed in the open men's K1 1000m with a time of 3min 57.41sec while Demi Bates was victorious in the open women's K1 500m in 2:02.94.
