The Singapore Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (SSCMF) has announced its goal of qualifying a climber for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.

It has begun working with the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI), the Singapore Sport Institute and Sport Singapore to access  training facilities, sports science and a structured pathway for progression for climbers in the country in the hope they can make an impact on a sport that made its debut on the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020.

"Since the Tokyo Olympics and even before that at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, there was a keen interest in getting a high-performance pathway for urban sports going,” NYSI deputy director Low Chee Yong said.

"We also think it’s an understated sport, if you look at the stats, the number of gyms and people climbing, it’s actually a significant base of development opportunity,"

Last November, a National Climbing Training Centre was established at the NYSI’s Kallang complex.

It has two walls both six metres wide to accommodate both speed event and lead climbing.

Artificial Intelligence technology is also being used to provide real-time analysis of the speed-climbing motion, allowing the climber, coach and support staff to have immediate analysis.

Mark Chan of Singapore finished 13th at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires when sport climbing was first introduced and officials hope that the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar will provide another significant step.

"It’s just nice that the Olympics in the next three cycles will have all these elements of urban sports so we decided to have one of our key strategies to support urban sports," Low said.

Spain's Alberto Ginés López won the men's combined event on sport climbing's Olympic at Tokyo 2020, with Slovenia's Janja Garnbret taking the women's in an event where Japan's Miho Nonaka and Akiyo Noguchi claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The number of commercial gymnasiums offering climbing walls in Singapore has almost doubled since 2018 as a reflection of the growth of the sport.

There are now 35 in Singapore, but officials believe the dedicated facility will speed up progress and enable climbers to train on harder routes.

The NYSI facilities can also be made available to schools and colleges.

"We’re moving towards that direction, it’s no longer just to get exposure," SSCMF secretary general Rasip Isnin said.

"We are targeting the 2026 Youth Olympics because we believe that our youth has a strong possibility of winning a medal at the Asian Youth Championships."

Singapore also hosted the General Assembly of the International Sport Climbing Federation last month.
