The International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship period standings have been finalised for 2021-2023, which sees a final between Australia and India closing off the schedule at The Oval in London.

The second Test in Wellington earlier this month, which saw the hosts New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 58 runs concluded the current period.

New Zealand moved from eighth to sixth in the standings, as they jumped Pakistan and the West indies, who each went down one position.

But it was not enough for New Zealand to qualify to defend the title they won in 2021 when they lifted the first World Test Championship.

The Championship has been launched as part of the ICC strategy of having one pinnacle tournament for each of the three formats of international cricket.

England took fourth place as Sri Lanka dropped due to their 2-0 series loss to New Zealand.

South Africa was close to securing a place in the final, but finished third as they were just behind India.

Australia topped the rankings as they claimed 11 wins for a total of 152 points.

This sets up the final between India and Australia, due to take place between June 7 and 11, where the two nations will battle for the coveted title.

The last final at the Rose Bowl in Southampton had seen New Zealand beat India by eight wickets with Kyle Jamieson being voted player of the match.
