The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) says planning is continuing for the Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships in Antalya, despite the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

The event is due to be held in the Turkish city from March 29 to April 2, and the FIG say that planning for the event is carrying on despite the earthquake, which is estimated to have led to the death of more than 51,000 people.

"The FIG office and the Turkish Gymnastics Federation are in regular contact regarding the 2nd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships, which are scheduled to be held in Antalya," a FIG statement said.

"As a result of the negotiations with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Türkiye and the Turkish Gymnastics Federation, the Turkish Gymnastics Federation is continuing its planning for the event and maintaining the same standards."

The FIG also offered its sympathies to the people of Turkey and Syria following the earthquake.

"Our thoughts are with the people of Türkey and Syria at this difficult time," the organisation added.

"Immediately after the earthquake, FIG officials wanted to make sure that everyone in the Turkish and Syrian Gymnastics Federations was safe and offered any help that was needed.

"The FIG is ready to provide all kinds of support for this disaster in Türkey and Syria."

More than 51,000 deaths have been confirmed, including more than 44,000 in Turkey and more than 8,000 in Syria.

The earthquake, which measured 7.8 in magnitude and happened on February 6, led to the collapse of thousands of buildings, while many sporting bodies have subsequently rallied round making donations to support recovery efforts.

Some sporting events have been impacted, such as the 2023 International School Sport Federation Winter Gymnasiade in Erzurum, which has been cancelled, and the European Archery Indoor Championships in Samsun, which has been postponed.
