Bishkek is set to host this year's edition of the World Youth and Junior Sambo Championships from October 13 to 15.

The Kyrgyzstan capital was selected following its successful hosting of the senior World Championships last year.

The decision was made by members of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) Executive Committee.

At the Championships, juniors will compete in full combat sambo tournaments but athletes in the youth categories will only take part in sport sambo competitions.

Kyrgyzstan is also due to host the World Sambo Cup from August 22 to 23 this year.

Bishkek hosted FIAS' flagship event in November last year for the first time in the Championships' 49-year history.

Approximately 500 athletes from more than 50 nations took part including Russian and Belarusian sambists, who competed as neutrals, under the FIAS flag and anthem.

FIAS athletes finished on top of the medals table overall with 14 golds, five silvers, and 10 bronzes.

The two nations are expected to compete again but whether they will be classed as neutrals or not remains to be seen.

FIAS was one of a handful of International Federations to allow Russia and Belarus to participate following the invasion of Ukraine.

The International Olympic Committee announced that it is exploring pathways to reinstate the two countries into global sporting events.
