Olympic champion Yuto Horigome suffered a shock exit at the Street and Park World Skateboarding Championships in Sharjah while Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Jagger Eaton took pole position.

The pair missed out on progressing to the men's street quarter-finals in the Emirati city after coming up short in today's qualifier.

The Championships are also serving as qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Japan's Horigome put pressure on his second run after falling in the first, but despite putting together a decent performance it was still not enough to finish in the all-important top 28.

Eaton is beginning his road to Paris 2024 having missed the first Olympic qualifier in Rome last year due to injury.

The American finished eight points clear at the top of the standings as he posted a score of 83.15.

Although Japan lost its biggest star in Horigome, the country's best prospect Onodera Ginwoo qualified in second place with 74.91 points to lead his four compatriots.

The 12-year-old is tipped for future success following his triumph at the National Championships in November last year.

Alexander Midler joins his countryman Eaton in the next round as his total of 73.03 saw him make up the top three.

Horigome's early departure was not the only surprise at the Aljada Skate Park.

Double world champion Shane O'Neill of Australia fell on both of his attempts meaning he was a long way from the 56.43 points set by Brazilian Kelvin Hoefler, who finished in the last qualifying place.

Olympic silver medallist Hoefler was one of five Brazilian skaters that progressed.

He was joined by team-mates Giovanni Vianna, Ivan Monteiro, Eduardo Neves and Lucas Rabelo.

Quarter-finals are scheduled to take place tomorrow, followed by the semi-finals on Saturday (February 4) and the finals on Sunday (February 5).

Competition in the Park World Championships is due to start next Wednesday (February 8) and run until February 12.
