A shoot-out then followed where they held their nerve in sudden death to prevail 5-4 and secure a third title.

The result has moved Germany into top spot in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Men's World Outdoor Rankings.

"Another comeback proves that it is skill and not luck," said player of the match for Germany Niklas Wellen.

"We have to give credit to Belgium who have achieved so much over the past decade.

"We knew it wouldn’t be easy to win this and going down two goals early didn’t get us down.

"Every single player in this team has given so much for this win.

"This is an unbelievable feeling for us."

Field goal strikes from Florent van Aubel and Tanguy Cosyns within two minutes of each other gave the Belgians a commanding lead in the first period.

However, Germany chipped away at the deficit with a goal in each of the remaining quarters courtesy of Wellens, Gonzalo Peillat and Mats Grambusch and had a 3-2 advantage in the closing stages.

Tom Boon then equalised two minutes from full time with a penalty corner goal.

In the shoot-out, it was Cosyns who missed the decisive chance that gave Germany victory.

Earlier in the day, The Netherlands defeated Australia 3-1 to win the bronze medal.

Jeremy Hayward took first blood for the Australians before a Jip Janssen finish and Thierry Brinkman brace in the third quarter sealed the win.

"We were playing quite well in the first half but couldn’t convert our chances," said captain Brinkman.

"We didn’t change anything in the second half, we were just better at converting our opportunities and the way we have played today and through the tournament, we deserve this bronze medal."
