Alexandra Banado, Chile's Sports Minister, has said that the National Stadium Park, close to being finished, will be the first venue to be delivered before this year's Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Speaking during a tour of the key venues, Banado said work on the National Stadium Park, which will form the centrepiece of the Games, was "86 per cent advanced, so we believe that it should be the first work to be delivered."

The Minister added that, despite the fact that the work on the sports venue is being completed, it is not contemplated that it will be used for massive events before the Pan American Games, which are due to take place from October 20 to November 5, with the Parapan American Games scheduled from November 17 to 26.

"There are eight works being developed here, which involves a complex security issue that we are assessing together with our athletes," she said.

"We have a lot of rules about entering and leaving, so it is impossible to hold big events in the National Stadium Coliseum."

In her tour of the transformative construction work being carried out around the National Stadium, including spaces such as the Aquatic Center, the Rackets Center and the park for spectators, the Minister was accompanied by the President of the Chilean Olympic Committee, Miguel Ángel Mujica; the head of the Chilean Paralympic Committee, Sebastián Villavicencio; the President of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic; the executive director of Santiago 2023, Gianna Cunazza and the United States Ambassador to Chile, Bernadette Meehan.

The tour was preceded by a visit to the High Performance Center (CAR) where the group was able to view training sessions for Greco-Roman wrestling, Para-powerlifting and athletics, as well as other areas dedicated to the physical recovery of athletes.

The future Estadio Nacional Sports Park will be a new green lung for the inhabitants of Santiago thanks to more than 10 hectares of green areas, pedestrian walkways and leisure and recreational parks for the family.

Additionally there will be sports infrastructure over 64 hectares including bike lanes, venues for football, rugby and hockey, an aquatics centre, a Paralympic sport centre, a racket sports venue and a skating track.

Cunazza commented: "It was a very good visit - sometimes it is necessary to get closer and be close to the athletes who are going to participate in the Games.

"I am very happy that they invited us to participate, since it allowed us to get to know different environments and spaces that exist within the CAR.

"I am glad that all the work we have done as a Corporation is alive and makes so much sense for the athletes and Para-athletes who train daily here."
