Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) chief executive Amelia Evans has revealed she sees Brisbane hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games as a unique opportunity to promote the Gold Coast.

Evans, a chartered accountant, was previously the chief financial officer at the QAL, which is responsible for Gold Coast, Townsville, Mount Isa, and Longreach airports.

Gold Coast Airport, formerly known as Coolangatta Airport, is located at the southern end of the Gold Coast and approximately 56 miles south of centre of Brisbane.

The Gold Coast will be one of the main competition venues for events during Brisbane 2032.

In addition to staging beach volleyball, judo, wrestling, triathlon, football, marathon swimming and volleyball during the Olympics, the Gold Coast Athlete Village will house more than 2,600 athletes and officials.

During the Paralympics, the Gold Coast is due to host powerlifting, sitting volleyball, football five-a-side, boccia, triathlon and wheelchair rugby.

"It’s an exciting time, with just under 10 years to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympics Games," Evans told inside golf coast.

"Now is the time to reposition the Gold Coast as a brand by finding new ways to tell our story, sharing new and inclusive experiences to ensure this opportunity is fully leveraged.

"The future is exciting, we are always looking to add new destinations and airlines to our Gold Coast Airport network, and there are plenty of exciting announcements to come.

"However, securing these agreements can take a long time and often require a lot of different stakeholders - Government, airlines, tourism - to work together to make it happen.

"The Gold Coast is a spectacular place to visit and an even better place to live, so as an airport we are focused on what we do best, removing the barriers of distance and connecting communities all over the world.

"It’s up to the whole community to share our stories and make it a great place to be."

Gold Coast Airport started a major AUD$300 million (£172 million/$213 million/€196 million) redevelopment in 2016 shortly before the region hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games, an event which laid the foundation for Brisbane's successful Olympic bid.

The upgrades overseen by infrastructure group Lendlease included two new wide-bodied aircraft stands and a three-level terminal development with four aerobridges and improved ground transport facilities.

It enabled up to 19 additional aircrafts to take off and touch down.

In July 2019 work began on the 30,000 square metre southern terminal expansion, which was completed last August.

"Our newly opened International Terminal doubled our terminal’s footprint," Evans told inside gold coast.

"The redevelopment sits right next to the existing terminal and connects seamlessly via a system that has the ability to swing between domestic and international services, facilitating smooth passenger flow-through inside.

"The new facility is contemporary inside and out, bringing our customers a fresh, modern-day experience."
