A decision to allow other events, including music concerts, at the Accra Sports Stadium while it undergoes preparations for this year’s African Games has been defended by Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA).

NSA director general Peter Twumasi claimed that the Stadium is a multi-purpose facility and staging concerts, like dancehall artist Shatta Wale last month, helps raise much needed revenue.

Appearing before Ghana’s Public Accounts Committee, Twumasi claimed that such events help the NSA be able to maintain it for its core activities.

"There are also non-sporting activities like other entertainment which can also be accommodated," he told the Committee.

"The positive aspect of revenue generation which is very positive for the running of the organisation.

"This arrangement that we do are very harmless to the infrastructure and it’s a good way for the organisation to also generate revenue."

The NSA had launched a renovation programme in December 2021 to ensure that the venue, formerly named the Ohene Djan Stadium, will be ready for the African Games, due to take place in Accra’s capital between August 4 and 19.

"Already with what we have, if we were to even look at just that, there are more than enough for us to be able to host the African Games," Twumasi told the Committee.

"Talk about the Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara, here can do almost all the athletics.

"Yes, here we can do all the track and field events."

The arena, opened in 1972, was the scene for the worst stadium disaster in Africa when, in 2001, 126 spectators were killed during a football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
