Latvia's Kaspars Rinks did the double at the International Luge Federation (FIL) Junior World Championshipsin the Austrian venue of Bludenz, as he won gold in the men's singles and doubles events.

Rinks finished first in both runs of the singles to total 1min 03.833sec, 0.358 ahead of Germany’s Marco Leger, runner-up in both runs, and 0.427 ahead of Leger's compatriot Hannes Roder.

Alex Gufler of Italy was fourth, with fifth place going to Ukraine’s Danyll Martsinovskyi.

There was a similarly dominant performance in the doubles, where Rinks and partner Vitalijs Jegorovs won both runs to finish 0.208sec clear of Germany’s Moritz Jaeger and Valentin Steudte.

Rinks completed the same double at the European Championships last month.

Bronze went to the United States pairing of Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa, at +0.628.

Ukraine's Yulianna Tunytska, took gold in the women's singles with a consistent performance that saw her finish second in each of the runs for a total of 1min 04.723.

Germany’s Melina Fischer, winner of the first run, could only finish 15th in the second to end up in 10th place, while the winner of the second run, fellow German Anka Janicke, could not make up for her earlier 10th place and missed a medal by one place.

Silver went to home athlete Barbara Allamaier, fourth on both runs to finish 0.211sec back.

Italy’s Alexandra Oberstolz was third at +0.348.

Latvia claimed a third gold in the women’s double thanks to Viktorija Ziedina and Selina Zvilna, whose time of 1:08.868 earned them a narrow 0.019 margin over home team Lisa Zimmermann and Dorothea Schwarz.

There were two Latvian teams on the podium, as third place went to Marta Robezniece and Kitija Bogdanova at +0.135.

Janicke did reach the podium in Bludenz, and it was the top step as she played her part in Germany’s victory in the team event, with silver going to Ukraine and Latvia taking bronze.
