England's Football Association (FA) has entered discussions with FIFA about changing its national team's traditional white short colours for this year's Women's World Cup due to concerns about players having to wear them while on their periods.

British newspaper The Telegraph reported that the FA is seeking a shift to a darker short colour for the Women's World Cup, with kit provider Nike supportive of such a move.

The FA insisted it took players' concerns seriously.

"We recognise the importance and want our players to feel our continued support on this matter," a spokesperson said, as reported by The Telegraph.

"Their feedback will be taken into consideration for future designs.

"We will continue to work in close consultation with our partners Nike and we have appealed to international tournament organisers to keep this subject in consideration and allow for greater flexibility on kit colour combinations."

FIFA reportedly plans to work with the FA and other National Associations on their colour preference for the Women's World Cup, which is set to be held from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.

Teams are required to submit their kit choices for the World Cup by the end of this month, including one predominantly dark and one predominantly light version.

These are set to be finalised by the end of April.

England used white shorts when they won their home UEFA Women's European Championships last year, but players including Beth Mead and Georgia Stanway raised concerns about wearing them while having their periods.

English clubs, including Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Bristol City, have already moved away from using white shorts for their women's sides.

Any change for England would not come into force in time for next month's Arnold Clark Cup against Belgium, Italy and South Korea.

In November, organisers of the tennis Grand Slam Wimbledon relaxed the all-white dress code to permit coloured undershorts for female players from 2023, having come under pressure from current and former players.
