A 1966 FIFA World Cup winner’s medal awarded to the late England footballer Alan Ball has gone under the hammer for £200,000 ($243,000/€226,000).

The medal was sold as part of an auction featuring multiple pieces of English football memorabilia, including items from the historic win.

England famously beat West Germany 4-2 in extra time to claim victory at Wembley Stadium.

Ball's 1966 World Cup winner's medal and his shirt from his final squad cap, awarded for taking part in the tournament, were sold for a combined hammer price of £445,000 (£541,000/€504,000) in the Tennants Auctioneers' Toys and Models, Sporting and Fishing Sale held in Yorkshire.

The 1966 FIFA World Cup winner's medal sold for £252,800 ($307,180/€286,220) including buyer's premium and taxes, and Ball’s number shirt for £130,000 ($158,000/€147,000), £164,320 ($199,686/€186,080) including buyer's premium and taxes.

The 1966 World Cup cap sold for £115,000 ($140,000/€130,000), £145,360 ($176,643/€164,622) including buyer's premium and taxes.

From the same estate came the shirt that Pelé wore during the first half of England’s match against Brazil at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

That sold for £33,000 (£40,000/€37,000), £41,712 ($50,689/€47,238), including buyer's premium and tax.

Ball was the youngest and least experienced member of the legendary 1966 World Cup winning team at just 21-years-old.

He received widespread acclaim for his energetic and passionate performance that was fundamental to the team's victory.

During an international career that lasted until 1975, Ball won 72 caps for England.

In addition to playing as a midfielder for the likes of Blackpool and Everton, Ball went on to manage several clubs, including Manchester City, Southampton and Portsmouth.

He died at the age of 61 in 2006.

Ball had sold his medal and cap at auction in 2005, when they were purchased by the owner of Bolton Wanderers' Edwin Davies, who died in 2018.

Tennants Auctioneers' sporting specialist Kegan Harrison said: "We are absolutely delighted to have achieved such fantastic results for the vendor, who has had a long-standing relationship with Tennants.

"The 1966 World Cup victory will always be a golden moment in English sporting history, and we have been honoured to have handled the sale of these extraordinary items.

"It has been 56 years since that incredible match, but it is still very close to the hearts of all football fans."
