Brighton is seeking to host matches at the 2025 Rugby World Cup, with the next edition of the women's tournament to be held in England.

The Amex Stadium, home of the English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, held matches at the 2015 Men's Rugby World Cup, including the match between South Africa and Japan.

According to The Argus, Brighton and Hove City Council said it would "further enhance" the area's reputation as a sport city.

"We know, from hosting previous events, that major sporting tournaments can bring huge benefits to host cities, from attracting visitors, and boosting the economy to providing opportunities for residents and leaving a lasting legacy," said Councillor Martin Osborne, co-chair of the the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee.

"We look forward to finding out more about bidding to become a 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup host city, and how we can build on our growing reputation as a major sporting city."

Brighton's sport reputation has improved since the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the promotion of Brighton to the Premier League in 2017.

Last year, the Amex Stadium held matches at the Women's EURO 2022, which the hosts England won.

Discussions have started with World Rugby and the Rugby Football Union according to The Argus, with a Committee meeting set to take place on Thursday (January 12), at which point, councillors will make a decision over whether to go ahead with a bid.

Host cities are to be announced in early 2023.

England was confirmed as the host of the 2025 Rugby World Cup in May 2022.
