Malaysian Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has expressed her aspirations for the country to win its first Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024, adding that it cannot be a "one-man show" but will require the whole nation to contribute.

Yeoh claims that the aim is not just about simply winning the medal, but what it would do to develop sport in Malaysia.

"As we enter into 2023, it has become clear to me that a gold in Olympics 2024 is a must for Malaysia," she wrote on Facebook.

"Our first gold medal and our attempt at winning will birth new national heroes, inspire a generation of champions, uplift all sports at all levels, we will harbour bigger dreams in every area of life and industry, and we will believe in ourselves again.

"The 'Road to Gold' is not just about bringing home a medal from Paris 2024.

"It is about creating a template for how we invest in our athletes, how we make every competition count, how we can foster a sports ecosystem sustainably, how we gather data for grassroots scouting, how we can help our athletes build fanbases, and how to improve our measurements of sport development and success.

"May our pursuit of our first gold imprint in us a spirit of excellence that will raise the bar for young Malaysians and will remain with them for a lifetime."

Yeoh claims that in her meetings with athletes she has seen a determination to succeed on the world stage.

"Malaysia has a spark of flame in her that needs to be stoked," she added.

"Our nation yearns for a golden age, again.

"For us to achieve this, we must believe that it is something that we as a nation can, that Malaysia can rise onto the world stage and hold our own."

Malaysia has competed at every edition of the Summer Olympic Games since Melbourne 1956, except for Moscow 1980 when they joined the United States-led boycott over the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.

The nation has won eight silver and five bronze medals, with the best haul coming at Rio de Janeiro 2016 with four silvers and a bronze.

At the re-arranged Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 Malaysia won a silver medal in the men's keirin cycling thanks to Azizulhasni Awang and a bronze in the mixed doubles badminton through Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
