The 2023 African Road Cycling and Paracycling Championships will act as a preparatory event for the 2023 African Games, according to an official at the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF).

The GCF’s technical director Shaaban Mohammed said the Championships, due to be held from February 8 to 17, were "a good opportunity" for the nation, as reported by Modern Ghana.

Between 20 and 40 countries are expected to participate in the continental events, with the African Road Paracycling Championships due to take place in Ghana for the first time.

"The hosting of this event in Ghana will offer the platform for more Para cyclists to get classified by the visiting team from the world body," Mohammed said.

Competition at the African Road Paracycling Championships is due to take place across elite, junior, youth and under-23 categories.

Mohammed also spoke about plans to grow the sport of cycling in Ghana in the run-up to the African Games, due to be held in Accra in August.

Mohammed said he was in discussions with the Ghana Tourist Board to hold cycling races alongside festivals in the country.

He also announced plans for the construction of a Velodrome, which is expected to cost $60 million (£49.5 million/€55.9 million), and as well as hosting cycling, will also have facilities for concerts, basketball, volleyball, badminton, handball, table tennis and athletics.
