Canada's Commonwealth Games medal-winning 3x3 basketball and wheelchair basketball teams have won the People’s Choice Award for Most Trending Moment of the Year at the Canadian Sport Awards.

The country won golds in both women's events as 3x3 basketball made its debut at Birmingham 2022, while it won silver in the men's wheelchair tournament and bronze in the men's stand-up.

The Most Trending Moment of the Year Award was created in 2020 to honour national team athletes who captured the virtual world, and the 3x3 teams follow on from the success of Canada's Olympic gold medal-winning women's football team in 2021 and Para swimmer Danielle Kisser in 2020.

Taya Hanson, Rosalie Mercille, Sarah Te-Biasu and Tara Wallack comprised the winning women's 3x3 basketball team, with the wheelchair women's side made up of Kady Dandeneau, Tara Llanes, Tamara Steeves and Elodie Tessier.

The wheelchair men's team consisted of Vincent Dallaire, Colin Higgins and Robert Hedges, while Bikramjit Gill, Alex Johnson, Jordan Jensen-Whyte and Adam Paige represented Canada in the men's tournament.

Wheelchair Basketball Canada (WBC) executive director Wendy Gittens praised the players for their success.

"WBC would like to congratulate our men's and women's 3x3 teams on winning the award for the Most Trending Moment of the Year," Gittens said.

"Winning medals at the inaugural 3x3 wheelchair basketball competition at the Commonwealth Games this past summer was a tremendous accomplishment for our athletes."

Canada ranked third overall on the medals table at Birmingham 2022.

The debut of 3x3 basketball and wheelchair basketball at the Commonwealth Games followed on from its first appearance at the Olympics at Tokyo 2020.
