The competition is set to take place at Olympic Park, the same site for the 2016 competitions, in Barra da Tijuca.

The hosts won two of the 11 boccia medals in their Paralympic history at those Games.

More than 170 athletes from 40 countries are registered to take part in the event set to run from tomorrow until December 13.

It is the second time that the World Championships is being held in the city following the 2006 edition.

Brazil boast the talents of Maciel dos Santos who won individual BC2 gold at London 2012 and bronze at Tokyo 2020 and is expected to perform well on home soil.

The public will be able to watch the competition free of charge and all four courts will be streamed live on YouTube.

The mascot for the World Championships is named Dibo, a contraction of Dirceu and da Bocha, in a posthumous tribute to five-time Brazilian Paralympic medallist of the sport Dirceu Pinto.

Dibo won with 49 per cent of the vote to beat Tuto.

Dirceu died in 2020 at the age of 39 from heart problems.

"That choice could not have been better," said Artur Cruz, President of the National Association of Sports for the Disabled which is organising the 2022 Boccia World Championships.

"A more than deserved tribute to the best Paralympic bocce athlete of all time.

"I thank you for having had the opportunity and the honour to live with him, especially in moments that marked the history of bocce in Brazil and in the world.

"Dirceu was an example to all of us, not only for the achievements, but for the person who always was.

"This is a tribute that will be eternized in the family of the world's bocce."
