Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) President Francesco Ricci Bitti has claimed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has become the "umbrella of the sports movement" as he backed the dissolution of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) here.

Speaking at the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) General Assembly, Bitti argued that the abolition of GAISF would bring "simplification" to the sporting world and claimed that those who are against the move are "not informed".

The meeting, staged at the Olympic Museum in Swiss city Lausanne, was being held on the eve of the GAISF Extraordinary General Assembly where the future of the umbrella body is set to be decided.

"ASOIF is supporting the dissolution of GAISF for many reasons," said Bitti.

"It’s a simplification and clarification so the people that express some voice not of support I believe they are not informed historically and financially.

"The IOC has evolved very much in the last period, now the IOC is not what it was - the guardian of the Olympic Games.

"Now the IOC is also since 2020 the umbrella of the sports movement."

Bitti also claimed Marius Vizer’s attack on the IOC and its leader Thomas Bach at SportAccord in Russian city Sochi in 2015 was a key moment in GAISF’s history.

Vizer, who was leader of SportAccord, now known as GAISF, accused Bach of trying to block projects he tried to introduce, criticised the launch of the Olympic Channel as a waste of time and accused the IOC of a lack of transparency.

The International Judo Federation President also called for International Federations to be given a greater say in the future of the IOC and for a fairer distribution of money.

His speech plunged the organisation into a crisis as IFs from 22 Olympic and seven non-Olympic sports subsequently withdrew or suspended their membership.

"The picture that GAISF was an alternative to the IOC does not exist anymore and is not possible anymore," said Bitti.

"You have to be all together and try to work hard.

"After I took care of GAISF after the crisis of Sochi in 2015 which was perhaps the last important time in which somebody put himself as an alternative to the IOC.

"It proved to be wrong."

Bitti, who led SportAccord Convention between 2015 and 2017, said he tried to established a "new GAISF" only to find that it was "not needed".

"The services have practically disappeared with the integration of the anti-doping service of GAISF into ITA [International Testing Agency]," said Bitti.

"We did one [World Urban] Games and lost about CHF300,000 (£264,000/$316,000/€305,000) or CHF400,000 (£352,000/$421,000/€407,000) so I don’t think it was a good operation.

"I believe that we have to organise something if we are sure that we are not losing money.

"Thirdly, we have the [SportAccord] Convention and [IF] Forum.

"They will remain and will be reinforced by the representation of all the people now.

"ARISF will be represented with two members on the Board, so practically SportAccord will integrate all the activity of GAISF that remains.

"We need to avoid the double representation.

"What was very uncomfortable was to listen to two people that say they represent you, one is your association and the other is GAISF.

"ARISF is this in your situation.

"This is not working. GAISF is not needed.

"We need to be very simple and clear, so this is the reason why we support this process."
