Czech Republic's Petra Kvitová survived two match points to knock out ninth seed Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain in a thrilling women's singles third-round match at tennis' US Open.

Muguruza took the first set 7-5 in a clash between two players each with two Grand Slams to their name in Louis Armstrong Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, but Kvitová hit back to take the second 6-3.

The Spaniard twice had match points at 6-5 in front in the fifth, but Kvitová saved both of them to take the contest to a deciding tiebreak.

Muguruza herself was able to save three match points in the tiebreak, but Kvitová held her nerve to reach the fourth round.

She is set to face American Jessica Pegula, who reached the fourth round of her home Grand Slam for the first time by beating Chinese qualifier Yuan Yue 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Three-time US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, competing as a neutral because of a ban on her country's flag following the invasion of Ukraine, is safely into the fourth round with a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 win against Croatia's Petra Martić.

In the men's singles, seventh seed Cameron Norrie of Britain saw off Norway's Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets to reach the fourth round and make this the best US Open run of his career to date.

Last year's semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov of Canada had his run halted at the third-round stage, losing a highly entertaining match that lasted more than four hours against Russia's Andrey Rublev, competing as a neutral.

Rublev, a mixed doubles Olympic gold medallist at Tokyo 2020, took the first set 6-2, but Shapovalov hit back by winning the second and third 6-2 and 7-6.

A 6-4 fourth set in Rublev's favour took the match to a deciding fifth.

Rublev failed to convert three match points at 5-4 in front, with Shapovalov going on to force a tiebreak having made it 6-6.

The tiebreak was settled 10-7 in Rublev's favour, and he is set to play Norrie in the fourth round.

Third seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain had a memorable run to the quarter-finals last year, and is safely into the fourth round after beating the United States' Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 on the  Arthur Ashe Stadium show court.

However, there was joy for the host nation in Louis Armstrong Stadium, where Frances Tiafoe beat 14th seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
