Rhythmic gymnastics is set to make its 10th Commonwealth Games appearance tomorrow at Birmingham 2022 as the three-day competition schedule begins with the team all-around.

Malaysia's Koi Sie Yan is eager to lead her team to the top of the standings after winning three silver medals and a bronze in 2018.

She hinted that her hoop and ribbon routines would be the ones to watch as Malaysia hunt the team gold they last won at the home Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

Cyprus were dominant at the Gold Coast 2018 rhythmic gymnastics competitions as they took four out of six gold medals.

Diamanto Evripidou was key to that as she triumphed in the individual all-around, hoop, and ball competitions.

The then 18-year-old also won gold in the team all-around alongside Eleni Ellina and Viktoria Skittidi.

However, the Cypriots have a completely new line-up competing in Birmingham in the form of Neofyta Mavrikiou, Anastasia Pingou, and Anna Sokolova.

The trio will be watched closely at the Arena Birmingham to see if they can live up to the legacy of their predecessors.

Hosts England are also tipped for a podium place.

Their line-up is headlined by the most recent British all-around champion Marfa Ekimova, who was the first winner in three years following COVID-19-enforced cancellations.

She is joined by 2019 champion Alice Leaper and Saffron Severn, who has recovered from an injury picked up at the start of the year just in time to earn selection.

The team all-around final will see athletes compete in all of the apparatus disciplines - hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon – throughout the day before the winner is crowned at the Arena Birmingham.

It is due to run parallel with the individual qualification events tomorrow.

Day two is set to feature the individual all-around before the sport culminates on Saturday (August 6) with the separate discipline finals.

Rhythmic gymnastics first appeared at Edmonton 1978 before taking a 12-year hiatus and featuring at every edition since Auckland 1990.
