The seven-time Olympic gold medallist helped the United States to win the men's 4x100m freestyle relay yesterday in Hungary's capital, and clinched a first individual medal of this year's Championships in 22.57sec.

Brazil's Nicholas Santos took silver in 22.78 at the age of 42, while American Michael Andrew was only 0.01 further back in third.

Santos is the first swimmer to medal at the World Championships after his 40th birthday.

Dressel won a record eight medals at the last edition of the FINA World Championships, held in Gwangju in 2019.

He was one of three winners from the US on the second day of swimming finals in Budapest.

Torri Huske triumphed in 55.64 in the women's 100m butterfly to win her first individual medal at the World Championships.

Marie Wattel of France placed second in 56.14, while Zhang Yufei took bronze for China in 56.41.

Olympic silver medallist Alex Walsh was the third American winner of the day in the women's 200m individual medley.

She dominated the race, clinching an impressive victory in 2min 7.13sec.

Her nearest challenger Kaylee McKeown of Australia was 1.44 off the pace.

In third place, a time of 2:08.91 helped the US to set a junior world record.

The day's other swimming gold medal went to Italy's Nicolò Martinenghi in the men's 100m breaststroke.

With injury depriving Britain's back-to-back Olympic champion Adam Peaty of the opportunity to seek a fourth-consecutive world title in this race, the door was left open for Tokyo 2020 medallists Martinenghi and Arno Kamminga of The Netherlands.

It was the bronze medallist Martinenghi who came out on top in 58.26, beating his Dutch rival by 0.36.

American Nic Fink was only 0,03 further back with his time of 58.65.

The second artistic swimming gold of the World Championships was also awarded today at the Széchy Outdoor Pool on Budapest's Margaret Island.

There was a trio of sisters who finished on the podium in the duet technical event, led by China's Wang Liuyi and Wang Qianyi who scored 93.7536.

Maryna Aleksiiva and Vladyslava Aleksiiva of Ukraine were second with 91.8617, while the panels awarded 91.2622 to Austria's Anna-Maria Alexandria and Eirini Alexandri.

Further swimming finals are scheduled tomorrow in the men's 200m and women's 1,500m freestyle, men's and women's 100m backstroke and women's 100m breaststroke.

Artistic swimming medals are set to be decided in the mixed duet technical and free combination, and the women's water polo tournament is due to get underway in the host cities of Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and Sopron.
