Delhi Sports University (DSU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of East London (UEL) as it seeks to establish itself as a global sporting institution.

The accord was signed in Delhi with several key figures present, including Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and DSU vice-chancellor Karnam Malleswari.

It is hoped that the MoU will lead to the exchange of knowledge, research, teachers and students between the two universities.

A statement from DSU said it was "the first international tie-up for mutual co-creation and innovation" for the institution, and that it was looking forward to "working together towards advancement in the field of sports".

DSU, a new Delhi Government educational institution, is yet to open its doors.

It was announced in 2019, with the construction of its campus, which is expected to house up to 3,000 student-athletes, still in the early stages.

"Delhi Sports University doesn’t belong to Delhi alone; we’ve developed it for every single Indian out there," Kejriwal said.

"In the coming days, this agreement will prove to be historic not just for Delhi Sports University but for athletes all over India.

"It is a crucial milestone in DSU’s journey that such a renowned foreign university got on board with us.

"They have a deep and meaningful relationship with the Olympics and that will benefit us in realising our dream."

The UEL played a key role in the London 2012 Olympic Games, as it provided residential services and training facilities for the American Olympic delegation and Britain's medical team at its campuses.
