Czech Republic eighth seed Karolína Plíšková and 2018 French Open champion Simona Halep have fallen in the second round of the women's singles at Roland Garros to unseeded opponents, being the biggest casualties exiting today.

Plíšková was eliminated in straight sets by Leolia Jeanjean from France by a comfortable margin, with the world number 222 winning 6-2, 6-2.

The wildcard is next set to face Irina-Camelia Begu from Romania, who defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova, the Russian playing as a neutral, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. 

Begu apologised during her match for throwing her racquet in the third set, receiving a warning after narrowly missing a crying child when it inadvertently headed into the crowd after bouncing.

Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwin showed why she is one of the most exciting prospects on the women's circuit after the world number 70 knocked out the Romanian 19th seed Halep, coming from a set down to triumph 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Polish world number one Iga Świątek continued her dominant form as she seeks to win her second Grand Slam at the event that saw her break through.

Today she thrashed Alison Riske from the United States 6-0, 6-2, meaning she takes on Danka Kovinić from Montenegro, who defeated Anna Karolína Schmiedlová from Slovakia 6-3, 7-5.

Spanish third seed Paula Badosa survived a tricky second set to overcome Kaja Juvan from Slovenia today 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, meaning she plays Veronika Kudermetova next - with the Russian, playing as a neutral, a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunić.

Madison Keys from the US defeated home favourite Caroline Garcia 6-4, 7-6, meaning the 22nd seed is to take on 16th seed Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, a 6-4, 6-0 winner over American wildcard Katie Volynets.

In an all-American match-up, Shelby Rogers defeated ninth seed Danielle Collins 6-4, 6-3 and next plays 20th seed Daria Kasatkina, who is playing under a neutral banner due to Russia's involvement in the invasion of Ukraine.

Kasatkina eased past Mexican qualifier Fernanda Contreras Gomez 6-0, 6-3.

Another neutral athlete, Aryna Sabalenka, who usually competes under the Belarus flag, defeated American Madison Brengle 6-1, 6-3, meaning the seventh seed plays the 28th seed Italian Camila Giorgi who won 6-3, 7-5 over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva.

American 11th seed Jessica Pegula progressed in three sets by beating Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, and is now scheduled to meet Slovenian 24th seed Tamara Zidanšek, who received a walkover victory over Egyptian Mayar Sherif.

Finally, in the night session match on Court Philippe Chatrier, home player Alize Cornet overcame 2017 French Open champion and 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-0, 1-6, 6-3.
