Canada have risen to the top of Group A after playing out a thrilling tie against bottom-placed Kazakhstan at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship in Tampere.

A hattrick from Dylan Cozens was the difference maker in the match which ended 6-3 to Canada.

Canada led after a back-and-forth first period with Cozens, Drake Batherson and Adam Lowry getting on the scoresheet.

Yegor Petukhov and Arkadi Shestakov were the scorers for Kazakhstan.

Damon Severson extended Canada’s advantage in the second period before Kirill Savitsky reduced the deficit back to one in the third period.

A double from Cozens after guaranteed the points for Canada which fires them to first in the standings.

Meanwhile, Germany edged Denmark 1-0 thanks to a second period strike from Marc Michaelis.

Germany are third and Denmark are one place below.

In Group B, Czech Republic thrashed Latvia 5-1.

Five different scorers contributed to the Czech’s stunning first period rout against Latvia.

Hynet Zohorna opened the scoring just after four minutes on the clock before Roman Červenka and Michael Spacek made it 3-0.

Tomáš Hertl added a fourth and David Pastrňák completed the frenzy.

Arturs Kulda got one back for Latvia but it did little to spur a late rally.

Czech Republic are fourth while Latvia are seventh.

The other Group B match saw the United States stroll to a comfortable 3-0 win against Britain.

A second period goal from Ben Meyers and two from Kieffer Bellows in the third period secured the victory.

The US are third as Britain remain on one point.
