Olympic champion Panipak Wongpattanakit earned her third successive taekwondo gold at the Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi.

Wongpattanakit, who was Thailand’s sole gold medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, was the clear favourite heading into the women’s under-49 kilograms competition.

The 24-year-old lived up to expectations by beating Vietnam’s Vu Thi Dung 24-4 to reach the final.

Two-time world champion Wongpattanakit earned dominant 29-0 win over Myanmar's Julius Dhaysi Oo to win the title for a third consecutive Games.

The host nation also celebrated taekwondo success with Pham Thi Thu Hien winning the women’s 62kg lightweight title.

The Vietnamese athlete triumphed in a golden-score period after her bout with Thailand's Tongchan Sasikarn ended level at 14-all.

A video review gave Pham the crucial winning score.

The hosts were denied gold in the men’s under-80kg event, where Malaysia's Muhammad Syafiq Zuber Bin beat Pham Minh Bao Kha 15-7.

Thailand’s Athi Sarabat beat Indonesia’s Nicholas Armanto 19-6 in the men’s under-87kg gold-medal match.

Long-distance races were also contested at the Games today.


Vietnam’s Thanh Hoang Nguyen was crowned as the winner of the men’s marathon in a time of 2 hours 25min 8sec.

Indonesia's Agus Prayoyo and Thailand’s Tony Ah-Thit Payne completed the podium places in times of 2:25.38 and 2:26.40, respectively.

Indonesia's Odekta Naibaho Elvina won the women’s marathon title in 2:55,28, with the Philippines’ Christine Hallasgo earning silver in 2:56.07.

Vietnam's Ngoc Hoa Hoang Thi earned bronze in front of a home crowd in 2:57.35.

The marathon races began at 5am local time to combat heat and humidity.

Vietnam celebrated success in the race walk events with Vin Vo Xuan and Thanh Phuc Nguyen winning the men’s and women’s titles, respectively.
