World number one Cannone faced a tough challenge in the form of Morocco's Houssam Elkord in the deciding duel at the Karl-Rau-Halle in the German city.

The world number six was neck-and-neck with the formidable Frenchman until Cannone finally pulled away to seal a 15-11 triumph.

The result marked Cannone's first World Cup gold of his career in an event featuring 261 individual fencers and 35 teams.

In the semi-finals, Elkord beat Italy's Gabriele Cimini in a thrilling encounter which ended 15-14, while Cannone was victorious against Hungarian world number 17 Mate Tamas Koch 15-9.

En route to the penultimate round, Koch took a major scalp in French world and Olympic champion Yannick Borel with a 15-11 quarter-final win.

He also beat Venezuela's London 2012 gold medallist Rubén Limardo 11-9 in the round of 16.

South Korea dispatched Germany 45-32 in the final of the team event thanks to commanding performances by Rio de Janeiro 2016 gold medal winner Park Sang-young and 35-year-old Kweon Young-jun.

Kim Myeong-ki and Son Tae-jin also contributed to the country's success over a German squad made up of Richard Schmidt, Lukas Bellmann, Marco Brinkmann, and Samuel Unterhauser.

Germany got the better of France 45-30, while South Korea scraped past Hungary 37-36 in the semi-finals.

France took third place after a narrow 45-43 win over Hungary in the bronze medal match.
