Ukraine beat France in the men's football final to cap an outstanding campaign at the Deaflympics in Brazil which saw the country lead the medals table with a total of 61 golds, 38 silvers, and 38 bronzes.

The performances in Caxias Do Sul meant that Ukraine topped the standings at the event for the first time in 13 years.

Turkey bagged the bronze medal in the men's football tournament following victory over Germany and claimed seventh overall in the Games with eight golds.

The United States also ended the Deaflympics on a high with a win against Poland in the women's football final while hosts Brazil rounded out the podium with a comfortable victory against Japan.

The Americans finished as overall runner-up in Brazil with 19 gold medals, 11 silver, and 24 bronze, while Iran took third place with 14 gold, 12 silver, and 14 bronze medals.

The only other sporting action on the final day saw 44-year-old Nele Alder-Baerens of Germany pick up her third Deaflympics gold medal with a triumph in the women's marathon.

Alder-Baerens, victorious in the Melbourne 2005 5,000 metres and Samsun 2017 marathon, crossed the line in 2 hour 53min 41sec.

Polish duo Małgorzata Mejka and Agata Kosztowny followed suit in 2:55:00 and 3:05:00, respectively.

In the men's marathon, Daniel Kiptum led a Kenyan one-two as he posted a time of 2:18:00 ahead of compatriot Peter Wareng in 2:20:19, while Sweden's Otto Kingstedt secured bronze 26 seconds later.
