Men’s top seed Novak Djokovic enjoyed a comfortable straight sets win at the Madrid Open tennis, but it was a day of mixed fortunes for two British Grand Slam champions.

World number one Djokovic ran out a 6-3, 6-2 winner against France’s Gael Monfils in the round of 32 stage at the Caja Magica and will now face Britain’s Sir Andy Murray in the last 16.

The Serbian's victory over Monfils saw him become the first man in the open era to hold an 18-0 record against an opponent on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour.

Sir Andy, playing as a wildcard at the joint ATP Masters 1000 and Women’s Tennis Association 1000 tournament, defeated Denis Shapovalov, the 14th seed, in three sets in a match that finished at just after 12.30am local time.

Sir Andy took the first set 6-1, but his Canadian opponent battled back to take the second 6-3, before the three-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist took the decider 6-2.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw sixth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia, playing as a neutral, battled back from a set down, and 3-0 in the decider, to avoid an upset against British wildcard Jack Draper.

Two more seeded players went out in the men’s singles draw, with 15th seed Reilly Opelka defeated 6-3, 7-5 by compatriot Sebastian Korda, while 16th seed Pablo Carreno-Busta of Spain lost 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in a hard-fought contest against Botic Van De Zandschulp of the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles draw, the highest seed in action today was Britain’s Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, who was beaten 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 by Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina.

The victory for the world number 37 saw her reach a first WTA 1000 quarter-final, with Raducanu hampered by a back injury during the match.

Kalinina will face Jil Teichmann of Switzerland in the last eight, after Teichmann cruised past Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 6-3, 6-1.

In the day’s other last 16 encounters Jessica Pegula of the United States, the 12th seed, beat Canada’s Bianca Andreescu 7-5, 6-1, while Spain’s Sara Sorribes-Tormo overcame Russian Daria Kasatkina, playing as a neutral, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
