England head coach Jess Thirlby has said the team selection for the Commonwealth Games will be left as late as possible to assess players’ form.

England will seek to defend their Commonwealth Games netball title at Birmingham 2022.

Thirlby told the Vitality Netball Superleague's show Off The Court that the team would likely be determined after the Netball Superleague Grand Final, scheduled for June 5.

The Commonwealth Games is set to begin on July 28, with first group matches due to be held the following day.

Thirlby will select a 12-member team for the Games.

"Most probably, for the last 12 months, we've had 18 to 20 players who are pushing," Thirlby said.

"It will come down to form and for that reason, we're leaving our selection for the Commonwealth Games as late as we can.

"Our selection will be shortly after the Superleague Grand Final on June 5, publicly it might be a little bit longer after that, but it's really exciting times.

"We're giving all of the players a full Superleague season and, by doing that, we're also giving those who are overseas as much of their season as possible to show that they're in form, and allow us to think if they're the right people to reconnect with the players here in the UK."

England are currently third in the world rankings heading into the Commonwealth Games, behind Australia and New Zealand.

England will join New Zealand, Malawi, Uganda, Trinidad and Tobago and Northern Ireland in Group B at the Games.

Australia, Jamaica, South Africa, Scotland, Wales and Barbados will compete in Group A.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals.

The gold and bronze medal matches are scheduled for August 7.

England were crowned Commonwealth Games champions in netball for the first time at Gold Coast 2018, where they overcame hosts Australia 52-51 in a dramatic gold medal match.
