Hennessy of Costa Rica, who is ranked third in the standings, entered the tie as the favourite and originally stood up to the expectation with scores of 7.00 and 5.50 on the second and third waves to put her tally at 11.60.

Bryan, under pressure to better her tallies of 4.00 and 1.93, responded with two match-winning surf of 6.53 and 5.07 as Bryan faulted and failed to improve her two previous totals.

The 11th ranked surfer advanced to the semi-finals for a score of 12.50.

She will surf against Conlogue, who edged Australia’s Molly Picklum 13.00 to 12.17 in their first encounter.

The American scored 7.83 and 5.17 early into the contest, which her opponent could not match.

The other semi-final will see Australian compatriots Bronte Macaulay and Isabella Nichols go head-to-head following their quarter-finals triumphs.

Macauley skimmed past fellow Australian Stephanie Gilmore 8.90 to 8.80 and Nichols dominated Johanne Defay.

Nichols made full use of her home waves to tally 11.50 - 4.00 higher than her rival.

In the men’s event, eleven-time WSL champion Kelly Slater survived elimination alongside Jason Andre of Brazil to head to the round of 32 while Australia’s Jack Thomas exited the competition.

Brazilian duo Caio Ibelli and Deivid Silva also advanced as the hosts' Ben Spence was eliminated.

Frederico Morais of Portugal and Miguel Pupo of Brazil got the better of Australia’s Jacob Willox to progress.

Samuel Pupo - brother of Miguel - also made it to the round of 32 following a dominant display with Matthew McGillivray of South Africa at the expense of Hawaii's Seth Moniz.

Matchups in the round of 32 include Slater due to compete against Andre while McGilivray faces a tough challenge against Japan's Olympic silver medallist Kanoa igareshi.

The competition is expected to continue tomorrow depending on surfing conditions.
