The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Players' Commission has staged its first meeting, gathering at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies.

Four members of the Players' Commission were able to attend the meeting physically at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) headquarters in Switzerland, while three more joined remotely.

IWBF secretary general Norbert Kucera and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletes' Council chair Jitske Visser also took part.

Kucera discussed the panel's main priorities as well as how to arrange players’ commissions at zonal level.

Visser talked through the ongoing work of the IPC Athletes' Council and how it can cooperate with the IWBF Players’ Commission.

Canadian wheelchair basketball player Erica Gavel has been chosen to be responsible for the organisational processes and key operations of the Players' Commission.

At this year's IWBF World Congress, the Players' Commission is expected to be written into the organisation's statutes, giving its a chair a seat on the IWBF Executive Council.

"It’s hard to believe that after two years of developing a framework, statutes, and processes etc., we finally have a full commission and representation from every Zone," Gavel said.

"This first in-person meeting was an excellent first step in where we want to go and the goals we have in place.

"Many thanks to FIBA and the House of Basketball for hosting us.

"To be surrounded by such greatness was a tremendous honour and privilege, and we look forward to extending this partnership moving forward."

In addition to their meeting, the four Player's Commission members in Mies were welcomed by FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis and given a tour of the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball Museum.

Gavel won a silver medal at the 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto, gold at Lima 2019, and represented her country at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.
