Emeka Ogbu has been elected President of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) on a two-year term.

Ogbu, who works at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, was the sole candidate for the position.

Nnadozie Cliford had been due to contest the election, but withdraw prior to the vote.

The election was held during the NUGA Games in Nigeria’s largest city Lagos.

Ogbu reportedly vowed to collaborate with sports directors at affiliated universities to support the development of the Games and athletes.

"We will collaborate and bring the best of brains to raise the bar in terms of preparation and sourcing for partnerships to improve the quality of our sporting competitions," Ogbu said, according to the Nigerian Observer.

Ogbu will step up from the first vice-presidency role.

He had held the position under outgoing President Stephen Hamafyelto.

Bawa Mohammed will now serve as the first vice-president, while Michael Ajibuwa was also elected to the organisation’s leadership team.

The NUGA Games featured 75 universities.

Competition was held on the campus of the University of Lagos.

Uniport finished as the overall winners of at the Games.

The university’s athletes earned 61 gold, 29 silver and 30 bronze medals.

The University of Lagos finished second at the home Games, securing 33 gold, 34 silver and 19 bronze medals.
