Switzerland’s Marcel Hug broke the men’s T54 5,000 metres wheelchair world record for the second time this month, as the World Para Athletics Grand Prix concluded in Dubai.

The six-time Paralympic champion had shaved seven seconds off the previous record of 9min 42.83sec by United States’ Daniel Romanchuk last week.

Hug’s effort, achieved at an international meet in Sharjah, still awaits World Para Athletics ratification.

The Swiss star has already improved on the mark by finishing the T54 5,000m event in a winning time of 9:32.32 today at the Dubai Club for People with Determination.

Hug enjoyed a clear margin of victory over his nearest rivals.

Thailand’s Prawat Wahoram and Britain’s Daniel Sidbury completed the podium in times of 10:00.92 and 10:01.19 respectively.

The race was the final event on the programme of the opening Grand Prix event of the season in Dubai, with the result Hug’s second triumph after 1,500m success.

The women’s T54 5,000m saw Germany’s Merle Marie Menje earn victory in 11:55.71, with Switzerland’s Patricia Eachus second in 11:56.50.

United States’ Brittini Mason added the women’s T46/47 100m title to her 200m success, after completing the event in a winning time of 12.43.

Colombia’s Darian Jimenez Sanchez won the women’s T38 event in 12.92, with compatriot Karen Palomeque Moreno taking the T37/44/63 title in 13.34.

Nicole Nicoleitzik of Germany secured the T35/36 100m victory in a time of 14.71.

The men’s T35/36 100m final saw Colombia’s Omar Acosta Soto emerge as the winner in 12.52, while team-mate Jean Mina Aponza clocked 10.71 to win the T13 competition.

Britain’s Thomas Young won the T38 final in 10.99, as India’s Pranav Prashant Desai crossed the line in a time of 11.74 to triumph in the T63/64 event.

Kenyan athletes earned three 1500m titles on the final day.

Mary Njoroge recorded a time of 4:50.43 to win the women’s T11/12/20 event in 4:50.43.

Wilson Bii earned the men’s T11/12 title in 4:22.62, while Wesley Sang clocked 4:06.48 to win the T13/20/46 race.
