Earlier this season, McGrath finished third at the floodlit World Cup slalom event in Schladming for his first World Cup podium, and again produced impressive skiing after dark in Austria.

McGrath completed the course in 54.55sec on his first run, a total that was enough for second overall behind Austria’s Johannes Strolz, who finished in 53.58, at the halfway stage.

McGrath only recorded the sixth-fastest time of run two, but his 57.96 was enough to give him a total of 1min 52.51sec, and victory by 0.29 seconds.

In second overall was Clement Noel of France, who was third after run one but struggled somewhat on run two only managing ninth, finishing with a total time of 1:52.80.

Daniel Yule of Switzerland completed the podium following a fluctuating contest, with skiers' fortunes changing dramatically during the course of the two runs.

Yule was fourth after run one, but only 15^th on run two, finishing in 1:53.15.

The leader after run one Strolz finished just off the overall podium, appearing to lack confidence in run two as he ended with a total time of 1:53.17.

The fastest on run two was Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen in 57.60, the slalom World Cup leader coming into the event in Flachau.

The damage had already been done for Kristoffersen on run one when he struggled with the last roller and only came 28^th at halfway, although his second-run improvement was enough to give him a 16^th-place finish overall.

Despite his struggles Kristoffersen still leads the overall slalom World Cup race on 371 points, with Norway’s Lucas Braathen in second on 323 and Linus Straßer of Germany third on 307.

Today’s winner McGrath moves up to 10th in the overall World Cup race, with 248 points.
