Gilles De La Bourdonnaye, a three-times Paralympic Games table tennis gold medallist, has been appointed as the table tennis sport manager for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

De La Bourdonnaye, who in total has won nine Paralympic medals across five Games, said he was honoured to be appointed to the role.

"I am delighted and proud to become the table tennis sport manager for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games," said De La Bourdonnaye.

"I have already started working with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), and I also had the privilege to meet with President (Petra) Sörling last year.

"Many ideas have already come up. I am confident that the Paris 2024 table tennis competitions are going to be incredible."

In his new role De La Bourdonnaye will work alongside Paris 2024 sports director Jean-Philippe Gatien, who has won two Olympic table tennis medals - singles silver at Barcelona in 1992 and doubles bronze at Sydney in 2000.

De La Bourdonnaye’s responsibilities will include competition planning, organisation, and delivery, while he will also coordinate all technical aspects such as the competition area, competition schedule, the training site and equipment.

Speaking about his appointment ITTF secretary general Raul Calin said: "I have known Gilles for many years. As an athlete, he regularly competed against the players I used to coach, and a friendship quickly bloomed.

"He is a great professional, and I am delighted by his appointment.

"The ITTF is looking forward to collaborating with Gilles to prepare for the delivery of a world-class competition and an innovative sporting experience.

"There are two years left until the opening of Paris 2024, but our work starts now. We are keen to use the Games’ preparation to engage the French population and further grow table tennis in France and Europe."

Para table tennis has featured at every edition of the Paralympics since Rome 1960, with 31 medal events contested at the last edition in Tokyo, where De La Bourdonnaye competed in the men's singles class 10.

Para table tennis competition during Paris 2024 is scheduled to take place at the South Paris Arena 4, an exhibition and convention centre.
