Organisers of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have signed four new sponsors to provide services and equipment for the event.

Aston University headlines the new partners of the Games as the official university sponsor.

Their role is to loan ophthalmic equipment, specific eye medical items, and supply eye care, which is supported by qualified optometrist volunteers.

They will be based in three polyclinics that will contribute towards building healthcare facilities for team officials and athletes.

The university will also provide parking and temporary electric vehicle charging areas to help the event in its goal of becoming the most sustainable Commonwealth Games in history.

Aston Business School postgraduates will oversee developing concepts to create a lasting sustainability legacy for the city.

Birmingham 2022 organisers and the West Midlands Combined Authority will review their ideas once they have been developed.

BMet, meanwhile, has become the Games’ official further education college provider due to their status as one of the largest further education colleges in the city of Birmingham.

Their duty is to create space for over 13,000 volunteers to be trained, ensuring the event runs at the expected standards.

Microplus has been announced as the official provider of Games information systems.

They will use their systems to provide accurate results data to fans following on the Birmingham 2022 website or broadcast coverage.

The final new sponsor is appliance care specialist Domestic and General, which has been appointed as the official warranty provider of the Games.

"Each sponsor brings with them industry leading expertise, and it’s fantastic to see the collaboration already happening to ensure Birmingham 2022 delivers a spectacular multi-sport event this summer," Katie Sadleir, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said.

Alastair Henderson, head of sponsor services at Birmingham 2022, added: "Our sponsors bring a high degree of experience to the table, and each play a crucial role in bringing an outstanding Games to the city."

The competition will welcome an estimated 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories around the world to compete in 19 sports and eight Para sports in 15 venues.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are due to begin on July 28 and finish on August 8.
