England have named eight Commonwealth Games debutants and eight returning athletes in the lawn bowls and Para lawn bowls teams for Birmingham 2022, including former women's singles champion Natalie Chestney.

Chestney headlines a five-member women's team for the lawn bowls competitions, having claimed gold at Delhi 2010 and silver at Glasgow 2014 in the singles event.

Chestney also won silver in the women's pairs at the Games eight years ago.

Sian Honnor has medalled in the triples at the last three Commonwealth Games, with Glasgow 2014 team-mate Sophie Tolchard also named in the squad.

Two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Jamie-Lea Winch and Amy Pharaoh complete the women's quintet.

Chestney's husband Jamie features in the men's team, having won fours silver and bronze at Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 respectively.

Another two-time Games medallist has a family connection in the squad, with Sam Tolchard joining sister Sophie.

Four bronze medallist last time out Louis Ridout is also among the five men selected, with Jamie Walker and Nick Brett completing the team.

Six athletes have been named to take part in the Para lawn bowls competitions, which along with the lawn bowls events are set to be staged at Victoria Park in Leamington Spa, the host of the annual British Championships.

Michelle White and Gill Platt have been selected for the women's pairs, and Craig Bowler and Kieran Rollings for the men's equivalent.

Alison Yearling and Chris Turnbull, who are visually impaired, have also been paired together, with Sue Wherry and Mark Wherry serving as directors.

England's Chef de Mission Mark England is confident that the athletes will be able to add to the nation's past achievements in the sport.

"Competing in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games is the pinnacle of the sport and we’re delighted to announce our fully integrated team for Birmingham 2022," England said.

"Team England bowlers have a successful history in performances at the Games and with a blend of experience and Games debutants in this team, we’re looking forward and excited to watch them compete."

Only Scotland are above England on the all-time bowls medals table at the Commonwealth Games, with both having won 20 golds.

However, England won only three bronze medals at Gold Coast 2018.

Lawn bowls and Para lawn bowls events at the home Commonwealth Games are scheduled to run from July 29 until August 6.
