Kenyans Nicholas Kimeli and Edinah Jebitok came away from the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza in Elgoibar with victories on a wet and muddy day on the World Athletics Cross Country Tour.

Emerging first from the finish of the women's race in Spain - which ended with a short section on an athletics track - was Jebitok, winning by 15sec over one of the favourites, Beatrice Chebet, also of Kenya.

Jebitok finished in 26min 3sec.

Uganda's world under-20 5,000 metres bronze medallist Prisca Chesang completed the podium, another 15sec back.

She was 11sec in front of Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia, who finished fourth having fallen earlier on a muddy downhill section and lost contact with the leading trio.

Kenyan 3,000m steeplechase world record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech was never in contention, despite starting as one of the favourites, finishing eighth.

Kimeli crossed the line 6sec in front of Ethiopian Addisu Yihune in the men's race.

Sixteen-year-old Ugandan Rodgers Kibet started quickly and was rewarded with the bronze medal 18sec back from the winner and far ahead of the rest of the field.

Spain's Adel Mechaal was the top finisher from the home nation in fourth, beating Ethiopian Getnet Wale on the line.

Nassim Hassaous of Spain was sixth, followed by Kenyan Amos Serem and Italian Iliass Aouani.
