Austria enjoyed double success in the men’s and women’s provisional competition rounds for the latest Nordic Combined World Cup in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Franz-Josef Rehrl and Annalena Slamik both claimed victories ahead of the individual events, which are set to take place on Saturday (January 8).

In the men’s competition Rehrl triumphed with a leap of 102 metres, scoring 142.4 points in the process to top the standings.

Yoshito Watabe of Japan finished second after a jump of 99.5 metres scored him 136.5 points.

Third place went to fellow Austrian Johannes Lamparter who registered the longest jump of the day, 105 metres, on his way to scoring 136.3 points.

World Cup leader Jarl Magnus Riiber of Norway was a notable absentee in today’s provisional competition round, and will not be competing in the individual Gundersen on January 8, after sustaining a training injury.

In the women’s competition Slamik topped the standings with 124.3 points following a jump of 98.5 metres.

Norway’s Ida Marie Hagen finished second on 120.4 points after jumping 92 metres, while compatriot Mari Leinan Lund ended third with 119.5 points after a 101 metre jump.

World Cup leader Gyda Westvold Hansen finished in fourth place on 117.9 points after registering a top jump of 90.5 metres.

Today’s provisional competition round took place in the build-up to the women’s mass start, scheduled for January 8.

Tomorrow is set to see a first ever mixed team World Cup event held in Val di Fiemme, with teams of two men and two women competing.

Each competitor will jump once on the normal hill, before taking part in a cross-country relay race over 15 kilometres, with each man skiing five kilometres and each woman skiing 2.5km.

Eight countries are scheduled to compete - Russia, United States, Slovenia, hosts Italy, Japan, Austria, Germany and Norway.

Slamik features among the Austrian quartet set to compete, although Rehrl does not feature.

Norway include women’s World Cup leader Westvold Hansen, although men’s World Cup leader Riiber is unavailable due to injury.
