Australia's Dylan Alcott, The Netherlands Diede de Groot and Japan's Shingo Kunieda have all been named as International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Champions after sensational performances in 2021.

Alcott has collected his third successive quad wheelchair title after he clinched a calendar golden slam for winning singles titles at all four majors, as well as the gold medal at the re-arranged Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The 31-year-old lost just one match out of 18 this year.

He is set to retire after competing at the Australian Open, which is due to start in Melbourne on January 23 and conclude on January 27.

"It’s an absolute honour to be named World Champion for the last time," Alcott said.

"To be honest, I just felt extremely grateful that I could travel round the world and do my job this year, especially with everything that’s going on in the world and in Australia.

"It was a team effort and there were lots of ups and downs, but we managed to get it done.

"This year I’ve had the proudest moments probably in my whole career, which is pretty awesome.

"I’m really stoked that I could finish it off with the golden slam and I’m really looking forward to my last tournament coming up at the Australian Open."

De Groot was selected as women's wheelchair player of the year for the third year running after also securing a golden slam.

She won Paralympic Games doubles gold in Japan with compatriot Aniek van Koot, as well as in the singles event.

"It’s been a very special year for me, winning all of the Grand Slams and then on top of that also the two gold medals in Tokyo," de Groot said.

"I hadn’t expected so much luck for this year, but looking back at it, I worked really hard for it and I’m happy that I achieved so much."

Kunieda took the men's wheelchair title for the ninth time following his fourth Paralympic title at Tokyo 2020.

The 37-year-old now holds 46 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles.

Alongside the athletes, François Vogelsberger was named ITF Wheelchair Coach of the Year.

The Australian coached the country's two best quad players Alcott and Heath Davidson to a fourth Australian Open doubles title and silver at Tokyo 2020.
