Noel produced a fine opening run of the competition at the night race, clocking 45.73 seconds down the Canalone Miramonti slope.

The Frenchman enjoyed a lead of 0.53 seconds over Foss-Solevåg, who had finished with the next fastest time in 46.26.

Sweden’s Kristoffer Jakobsen, Britain’s Dave Ryding and France’s Alexis Pinturault completed the top five within 0.8 seconds of the leader.

Last year’s third place finisher Alex Vinatzer of Italy and winner Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway were 0.92 and 1.34 seconds off the lead at the halfway mark.

Kristoffersen and Ryding failed to finish their second runs to highlight the difficulty of the course.

Noel appeared to have negotiated the second run unscathed to claim back-to-back World Cup slalom wins, but fell after the 60^th and penultimate gate.

The Frenchman slid past the final gate and across the line, leading to his disqualification from the event.

Foss-Solevåg proved the beneficiary of Noel’s misfortune, with the Norwegian heading the leaderboard in 1min 34.59sec.

The victory added to his second place finish at the same event last year.

Pinturault was the runner-up on this occasion in 1:34.69, with Jakobsen completing the podium positions a further 0.01 back.

Foss-Solevåg and Jakobsen share the lead in the slalom World Cup standings after two races, with the pair on 140 points.

Noel is third on 100 points.

Bormio will be the fourth and final Italian stop of the men's World Cup season, with the resort hosting an event starting on December 28.

One downhill race will be contested in Bormio, followed by two super-G races to round off 2021.
