Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young has won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second successive player from the university to win collegiate American football's most prestigious individual honour.

Young, who is in his second year at Alabama and first season as the team's starter, has put up a stellar stat line in leading the team to a sixth Southeastern Conference title in eight seasons.

As a result, Alabama are the top-ranked team in the United States heading into the College Football Playoff.

Young has thrown 43 touchdowns versus just four interceptions, added another three touchdowns on the ground, and has more than 4,300 passing yards on the season.

Alabama, the defending national champions, have won 12 of their 13 games this season.

Young, 20, is the fourth Alabama player to win the Heisman but the university's first quarterback to do so.

Crimson Tide wide receiver DeVonta Smith won the accolade last season.

Young was one of four finalists this year and received 684 first-place votes.

Aidan Hutchinson from the Michigan Wolverines was second and the only non-quarterback finalist, polling 78 first-place votes.

Pittsburgh Panthers shot-caller Kenny Pickett was third and the Ohio State Buckeyes' CJ Stroud completed the finalists.

Young is the first winner of the Heisman Trophy since US student-athletes have been allowed to make money off their name, image and likeness (NIL).

As quarterback for one of the nation's most successful college football teams, Young has been seen as an NIL trailblazer and head coach Nick Saban claimed that Young was making close to $1 million (£755,000/€890,000) from NIL sponsorship deals before even starting a game.
