China claimed the boys' and girls' under-19 singles titles at the International Table Tennis Federation World Youth Championships in Portugal, an indication the country's dominance of the sport at world level shows no sign of slowing down.

Man Kuai and Peng Xiang won the respective girls' and boys' crowns in contrasting fashion on the final day of the event in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Man needed seven games to get past Japan's 17th seed Japan’s Miyu Kihara in a gripping girls' final, eventually recording a 12-10, 11-7, 8-11, 11-5, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8 victory to secure the title.

She reached the final after fighting back to oust Kihara's compatriot Haruna Ojio 5-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5.

Kihara progressed to the tournament's showpiece contest with a battling 11-7, 2-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-2, 6-11, 11-7 win over China's Wu Yangchen.

Peng became the first player to clinch consecutive world youth crowns after beating European Youth Championships runner-up Samuel Kulczycki of Poland 11-9, 11-9, 11-1, 12-10.

The rising Chinese star, the reigning under-18 champion, claimed China's 11th gold medal at this level.

Peng beat India's Payas Jain 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-2, 11-1 to progress to the final, while Kulczycki overcame Zeng Beixun 14-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-6 to prevent an all-Chinese final.

The competition had previously been called the World Junior Championships.
