Gharibshi dethroned defending champion and Paralympic gold medallist Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar of Mongolia with a lift of 245kg.

Once his victory was confirmed, he then broke the world record by hoisting 251kg.

Enkhbayar was forced to settle for silver having managed a best attempt of 244kg, while bronze went to Saman Razi of Iran on 235kg.

"I can sleep well tonight," said Gharibshi. 

"I feel really delighted deep inside my heart.

"I have lost to the Mongolian athlete before so I was under pressure but I’m very happy that I was strong enough to fight back and set the scene for further development and improvement to get my gold medal."

Gharibshi's triumph came on a successful day for Iran as his team-mate Ahmad Aminzadeh topped the podium in the men's over-107kg competition.

Aminzadeh, also making his World Championships debut, lifted 255kg to ensure the men's heavyweight title remained in Iran.

The crown was previously owned by double Paralympic champion Siamand Rahman, who died at the age of 31 following a heart attack in March 2020.

Aminzadeh led a one-two for Iran as Mahdi Sayadi took silver on 247kg.

Konstantin Matsnev of the Russian Paralympic Committee earned bronze on 243kg, a European record.

"The late Siamand Rahman was an epic athlete in the history of the Paralympic Games and we miss him so, so, so very much," said Aminzadeh.

"He will remain the iconic figure in our competitions."

The Championships conclude with the mixed team event tomorrow.
